As a responsible mine operator, we are committed to leaving a legacy that is transformational for our host communities and broader Sierra Leone. Our social investments will ensure the people derive maximum benefit from the extraction of their mineral resources.
Our Community Development Agreement (CDA) sets out our commitment to bring positive socioeconomic change to our host communities through the responsible development of our operations.
The CDA both clearly and precisely defines our general welfare and social equity goals of our operations. The agreement formalizes our commitment to community development by establishing our obligations to the community and provides an avenue for the community to participate in the planning, implementation and management of activities under the agreement. It also includes a dispute resolution mechanism for resolving the issues that may arise.
As part of the CDA, we have established a Community Development Fund. This fund allocates above by 1% of net revenue from the project to be set aside for activities and programs which deliver tangible benefits to our host communities.
Improving access to education for children in remote communities is essential for the social and economic growth of our region. Binkolo Community Local Miners (BCLM) proudly aligns with United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 4 — Quality Education. Our mission is to promote inclusive, equitable, and quality education, while supporting lifelong learning opportunities for all.
In partnership with local authorities and existing educational institutions in Binkolo, BCLM has provided support towards the refurbishment of community schools and resources for the Binkolo Growth Centre — a vital hub for vocational training and youth education in the area. This collaboration is a testament to our commitment to community development and the future of our children.
Through these initiatives, we are helping to create safer, more supportive learning environments for children and young adults within Binkolo and surrounding communities, enhancing access to classrooms, learning materials, and skill-building opportunities that shape a brighter tomorrow.
The Binkolo Education Trust, established in March 2021 and overseen by a dedicated community committee, delivers the Binkolo Community Scholarship Program. Each year, scholarships are awarded to 10 outstanding students — with 5 students nominated by the Paramount Chief of the Binkolo community and 5 selected purely on academic merit.
Each scholarship is valued at approximately US$1,000 per annum, supporting students pursuing studies in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, healthcare, and other development-focused fields.
This initiative recognizes the importance of equipping the youth and adults in Binkolo Village and surrounding communities with essential skills to actively contribute to the growth and prosperity of the region.
Completed in January 2022, the Binkolo Health Centre underwent a significant upgrade, including the addition of a maternal health unit and an isolation ward, improving healthcare access for women, children, and vulnerable groups within the community.
Future community projects include:
A vital part of our community and public life, this facility will undergo full renovations with work scheduled to commence mid-2022, offering a safe space for gatherings, events, and decision-making meetings.
To combat water scarcity and waterborne illnesses, BCLM is launching clean water projects including borehole installations, reservoirs, and solar-powered pumping systems for the Binkolo community and neighboring villages.
Supporting local farmers with modern tools, improved seedlings, and training programs to boost productivity, enhance food security, and foster sustainable livelihoods across the region.
Planned improvements to public infrastructure, including roadworks, market shelters, and community meeting points to uplift living conditions and support local enterprise.
